Matthew Bates joins Matt and Ben in this episode to talk about what it means that we’re saved by allegiance alone. What we often think of as “the gospel” isn’t really the gospel, it’s just a reconfiguration of salvation-related facts (“justification by faith,” for example).
What is the actual gospel? Bates suggests it’s 1) Jesus’ incarnation, and 2) Jesus’ enthronement over all creation. From that point we can begin to discuss what salvation would mean (hint: it means “allegiance”).
Matthew Bates is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. Bates holds a Ph.D. from The University of Notre Dame in theology. His books include The Birth of the Trinity, The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation, and the award-winning Salvation by Allegiance Alone. But for fun, Matt enjoys hiking, baseball, and chasing around his small children.

Thinking about grace as a actual gift, rather than a fluid, or untouchable thing, undeserved, was good. A Gift, given , Grace for me is Christ, I go through the vale of his flesh , into the holy of holies. So I’m face to face with God, I then think of Him as king. And Worship comes as I’m in His presence , but I got that through Hebrews. Romans taught me grace, and freed me from working like a slsveto earn salvation. I treat Grace with a attitude of thankfulness. It makes me then worship Jesus…
