So far in our power series, we’ve focused on power abuse in institutional or church settings, but some of the most damaging power abuse show up in our most intimate relationships, and more often than you might imagine.
In this episode we interview Jaclyn Houston-Kolnik, who is a community psychologist with over eight years of experience conducting research on gender-based violence. Her program of research primarily focuses on victim services, gender-based violence, and how various factors (e.g., individual attitudes, organizational structures) shape community response to social issues. She has conducted quantitative research on the characteristics of religious congregations that promote social justice engagement and programs to address gender-based violence, as well as qualitative research on how Protestant Christian religious leaders understand and respond to intimate partner violence. Jaclyn has doctoral and master’s degrees in community psychology from DePaul University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Azusa Pacific University.
Jaclyn’s research digs into the roots of violence, and how to respond in a way that brings about restorative justice and healing. She talks about what churches need to do to respond faithfully to intimate partner violence.
