We talked with Dr. Matt Jantzen about his excellent book, God, Race, and Providence: Liberating Providence. Matt is the the faculty director of the Emmaus Scholars Program, a living-learning community at Hope College that combines the practices of intentional Christian community with academic and practical explorations of the relationship between faith and justice in contemporary global society.
Matt also teaches coursework in the areas of Christian theology and ethics, and his research explores the relationship between Christian theology, politics and race in the modern world.
We talked with Matt about how the White European doctrine of Providence conflated the European male with God in the doctrine of Providence. Our conversation points toward how to construct a doctrine of Providence for the contemporary church that reckons with its cultural and racial history. Be sure to check out his book and connect with him on Twitter.

We mentioned Sarah Ruble’s Sunday School Curriculum on the history of race in the US. You can find it here.
