Our series on Being a Christian in the USA continues with an invigorating conversation with pastor and author David Swanson about how many white Christians across America, when waking up to the deep-rooted racial injustice in our society, insinctively scramble to add diversity to our churches. But David argues that before white churches can pursue diversity, we must first take steps to address the faulty discipleship that has led to our segregation in the first place. This is the topic of his book Rediscipling the White Church: From Cheap Diversity to True Solidarity.
David W. Swanson is passionate about racial justice and reconciliation within the Body of Christ. He regularly writes and speaks about these and similar topics. David is the founding pastor of New Community Covenant Church, a multiracial congregation on the South Side of Chicago. He also serves as the CEO of New Community Outreach, a non-profit organization working to reduce causes of trauma and raise opportunities for equity in Chicago. He previously served as a Director of Church Planting for the Evangelical Covenant Church. David and Maggie have been married for 21 years and have two amazing sons.
